Book Review: The Age of Miracles

I finished The Age of Miracles last night. It was beautifully written and I liked it. I can't say it was a light read though, because the "slowing" was scary. =/

Age of Miracles

The way the story was narrated made it easy to understand not only the concepts but also the feelings of Julia (the main character). I can't imagine being her, with all what's happening to earth, and the drama of her everyday life.

It's the first pre-dystopian/ pre-apocalyptic novel I read, so it was refreshing to have an idea of the events that lead to destruction of earth. And unlike what I imagined, it happened gradually. (killing me softly ang peg ni mother earth)

Also, it's very predictable how people would react to this kind of situation, always on defense. It was sad knowing that no one can really do anything about it. *sigh* At some point, people will just have to accept and wait.

Oh! And let's hope the slowing will not happen. Please, no.

I suggest you read it too! Good book, I promise.

'Kay. That's all for now. Bye folks! =)

Currently Reading: The Maze Runner

I think this will be my last read for 2013. =)

Currently Reading: The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker

Age of Miracles

On the back cover:

The Age of Miracles is an unforgettable story about coming of age during extraordinary times, about people going on with their lives in an era of profound uncertainty.

On a seemingly ordinary Saturday in a California suburb, Julia and her family awake to discover, along with the rest of the world, that the rotation of the earth has suddenly begun to slow. The days and nights grow longer and longer, gravity is affected, the environment is thrown into disarray. Yet as she struggles to navigate an ever- shifting landscape, Julia is also coping with normal disasters of everyday life- the fissures in her family, the loss of friends, the hopeful anguish of love, the bizarre behavior of her grandfather, who, convinced of a government conspiracy, spends his days obsessively cataloging his possessions. As Julia adjusts to the new normal, the slowing inexorably continues.

NBS Book Signing Events

Wah! I want to attend these two book signing events by National Bookstore!

On January 18, it will be Gayle Forman, author of If I Stay, Where She Went, Just One Day and Just One Year. =) I read all of them except Where She Went (but I will, soon!).

Just One Day and Just One Year are among my favorite books. The story of Willem and "Lulu" is not just a love story. It is also a story of rediscovering themselves- finding out who they really are, what they want to do, and where they belong. And of course, the two books involved a lot of travelling (Paris!), thus while reading I was also transported to other places. =)

If I Stay... I started this book two or three times (X years ago!) but I only finished it last month. Haha! For me the book is about making decisions- for others and for oneself. For oneself: When Mia almost gave up, I understood that her soul was ready to go, that she was happy to go. She made a decision for herself, not thinking about others.

For others: Mia did not give up. After her revival, she was able to find reason(s) to keep on living. No matter how painful and lonely life is going to be, she still chose to stay. =)

Okay, on February 22, it will be Mitch Albom. Among his works, I already read Tuesdays with Morrie, Have A Little Faith, For One More Day, and The Time Keeper. There is only one word to describe his works: Inspiring. =)

I still do not have a copy of The First Phone Call from Heaven (Huhu! No money!). But hopefully by January makabili na 'ko.

I really really want to attend these events. No exams on those dates please! =)

Aklat Mo, Sagot Ko Part 1

December 8: The first part of our library project, Aklat Mo, Sagot Ko. =)

"Before" pictures:

The volunteers (L-R): Kuya Basil, Jaybie, Elaine, Trisha, Trina, Joyce, Cha, Angeli =)

Nakaka-overwhelm sa dami ang mga libro. Pero hindi lahat ay nagagamit. 'Wag ka meron silang Physiology books, Medical-Surgical Nursing books, Physics books at iba pang college books.

One of the teachers said that we can remove the books na hindi naman magagamit ng mga bata. =)  Obsolete na rin ang ibang books so kailangan na talagang mapalitan, especially now na may K-12 na.

 Lord of the Flies! Haha!

 Volunteers sorting out books.

 Painting...

We're not yet done though. Haha! Next Sunday (December 15) namin ipagpapatuloy. =)

Again thanks to Coca-Cola Foundation Philippines, Inc., Adarna House, and C&E Publishing House for making this project possible! =)

Sakit ng Kahapon

*poem I wrote X years ago

Alaala ng kahapo’y pumapaimbabaw
Mundo ko’y unti-unting ginugunaw
Bawat sakit muling nararamdaman
Sugat ng alaala muling nararanasan.

Habang sa kawalan, ako’y naka-tanga
Ang iyong mukha pilit inaalala
Nais ibalik ang nagdaang kahapon
Ligaya’t pagmamahalan nais ibangon

Nais makalimot, nais kumawala
Sa bawat kirot na dulot ng alaala
